recorded in the black hills of south dakota in september and october of 2023, the fat trio's first record features alex massa on trumpet, tenor saxophonist sivan hoch, electric guitarist tanner johns, alex diaz on the upright and electric basses, kaleb britton on drums and percusion, and guests johnny hastings on guitar (trolls) and vocalist leslie cline (trolls).
all of the songs were written by alex massa in iceland, new orleans, and chicago.
prologue/fear changes everything was inspired by a quote from a philip k. dick novel "the man in the high castle", and how fear - be it an illusion or reality - has the power to influence wide swaths of humans.
neville longbottom, written in celebration of a favorite literary hero of massa's, is a reminder that everyone blossoms at different times, and the courage to stand up to oppression lies deep within each of us.
ballad for krystal is written for and dedicated to massa's partner.
the title track, "dancing with trolls" is based on the lore of the famous 'ring road' around iceland. while traveling on the two-lane highway that circles the island nation, you may be caught off guard when you see a wild re-route of the road around a seemingly fine piece of flat land. when this road was being constructed, the workers took note of famous troll dwellings, and made sure to pour concrete far enough away from the trolls' homes so as to not be disturbed. while driving with fellow artists to the grocery store one day, i had a daydream of what it would be like to dance with the trolls of iceland on the fjords, overlooking the atlantic ocean.
water wars was partially written with an old project of alex's, lawrence undertaking. detailing the current water crisis happening in ethiopia, egypt, and the sudan, this track references sounds from that part of the world and an allusion to a well-known cinematic theme.
